Description:

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) Inclusive Excellence Admissions Scholarships (IEAS) are designed to foster diversity in academia by supporting the enrollment of underrepresented groups. Specifically, the program targets first-year Black and Indigenous master’s students entering PhD-stream programs (e.g., MA, MSc, MSW, MEd, MPH, and other research and professional programs that often lead to a PhD at U of T).

These scholarships are part of an SGS initiative inspired by the recommendations from key university reports, including the Weecheehetowin Final Report, the Anti-Black Racism Task Force Final Report, and the Scarborough Charter. The goal is to increase access to graduate education for Black and Indigenous applicants who bring unique accomplishments that may not align with traditional admissions criteria.

Eligibility:

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Apply to a U of T master’s program intended as a pathway to a PhD.

  • Self-identify as Black and/or Indigenous to Turtle Island (North America).

  • Submit an online Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) application to their nominating academic unit (OGS eligibility is not required).

  • Not have received other significant internal or external funding exceeding $10,000 at the time of the offer (excluding government loans or band funding).

  • Either not yet receive an admission offer to a funded program or have financial constraints preventing acceptance of an offer to an unfunded program.
